In reality, character is composed of three things.Īs columnist Bob Talbert writes, "Teaching kids to count is fine, but teaching them what counts is best." As Robert Freeman puts it, "Character is not made in a crisis it is only exhibited."
He told to people to "live in such a way that you wouldn't be ashamed to sell your parrot to the town gossip!"Īnd character is not something that comes ABOUT as a result of crisis it merely comes OUT in a crisis. It's quite different than being a "character." Will Rogers, the great comedian of the Great Depression, commented on that.
That being the case, you need to know the answer to two questions. Talented people are a gift to the world. Talented people have the potential to be difference makers. Talented people are praised for what others see them build. Talented people may feel superior and expect special privileges. Talented people are sometimes tempted to take shortcuts. Their absence of a strong character eventually topples them. People with talent often make it into the limelight, but without a strong character, they rarely stay there very long. Put another way, your character is more important than your talent. And in the end, character always trumps education. Even though Jason was going to school to get an EDUCATION, he was also in the process of developing his CHARACTER. But there's also an important lesson in that story. and we can be thankful it didn't happen to us and one of our own kids. Henderson asked, "Does Jason Henderson live here?" Henderson arrived at the fraternity house where his son lived and rang the door bell, someone from inside the house yelled, "Yeah?" Mr. and quickly learned that surprise visits may not be the best idea. 
He decided to drop in to see how his son's educational career was going.
